7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near New Caledonia (South Pacific)




Initial reading was 7.0 but was later downgraded to 6.8 magnitude.

An massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck just south of Vanuatu.

The quake, which had a depth of 15km, struck the area on Tuesday just before 12pm.

There were initially fears the quake had triggered a tsunami, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre declared there was no threat.

It is believed the earthquake could have been felt by people up to 1247km away.

It also could have caused damage up to 99km away.
