The vulnerability planet Earth possesses has never been so certain since December 2004 when a mammoth explosion occurred in space.

RARE GALACTIC EXPLOSION THREATENS EARTH

The good: the explosion occurred so far away (50,000 light-years to be exact) that there was only a slight and brief alteration to Earth’s atmosphere. The bad: who is to say the explosion could not have been closer?

This explosion has been defined as a once in a lifetime occurrence, so these explosions are unpredictable and wildly dangerous. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime event,” says Professor Rob Fender of Southampton University in the UK (Britt, 2005). We will take your word for it. For now.

“We may be seeing a massive release of magnetic energy during a ‘starquake’ on the surface of the object,” said Maura McLaughlin of the University of Manchester in the UK.

Earth’s atmosphere was altered in a way that is unnoticeable to the human eye. The ionosphere was slightly damaged where electrons and gasses were distorted, released, or altered. For a 50,000 light year distance, this is HUGE. For communication technologies to be altered because of a random and unprecedented explosion, this is grave. Had the explosion been 49,000 light years, or maybe even 50,000 light MINUTES, what could have occurred? But for now, we will just be appreciative that the only thing we had to worry about was dropped phone calls and a lack of internet connection.

So what exactly happened in space that caused such a great explosion and what can we do about it? When stars deplete in energy, they detonate and cause a massive explosion, or if you’re familiar with the term, a supernova. The scariest part about this is that there are so many stars in our galaxy that are slowly running out of energy and ready to explode. They are threats the world as a whole and something needs to happen! But what can we do? And that’s where it gets worse. Absolutely nothing. By the way, I heard the sun was a star.
