Large Asteroid to Fly by Earth at 0.3 Times the Distance to the Moon on September 1, 2020
A large asteroid, which currently has a condition code of 7 (0 being good and 9 being highly uncertain) will fly by Earth at 0.3 times the distance to the Moon on September 1, 2020.
The asteroid (2011 ES4) measures approximately 150ft (50m) across, is expected to hurtle past the Earth at the incredible speed of 18,253mph (29,375kmh).
Despite Space Agencies giving this space rock a condition code of 7, they say it’s no threat to Earth and is expected to pass safely, but it’s certainly a reminder that Earth has been vulnerable to cosmic impacts in the past, and will continue to be in the future.
But wait there’s more… on November 2, 2020 (one day before the presidential election), yet another asteroid (“2018 VP1“) will pass within about 300 miles of our planet, but according to NASA this asteroid is also no treat to Earth.
