Mysterious Booms Shake Homes in India

People in Mysuru, India, were left baffled by powerful but still mysterious booms on February 21 and 22, 2018. The huge blasts shook buildings and rattled windows in different parts of India. Panicked residents ran outside of homes as they feared the strange rumblings were caused by an earthquake.

An official from Department of Mines and Geology said, “Any conclusions would be too fast. People are totally panicking right now as they are assuming it was an earthquake. The mysterious explosion could have also easily been caused by a quarry blast. We are currently investigation the source of the intense boom.”

Interestingly, similar mysterious explosions were reported in some villages in Ivarapalli in Baagepalli Taluk and near Andhra border in Chikkaballapur district on Wednesday night around 7pm and 9pm. The mysterious booms shook houses during nearly five seconds with terrified residents running out of their homes. And the quarries are closed at this time of the day.

No injuries nor damages have been reported so far. However, the population is still looking for a cause for these mysterious booms! Officials say it was not an earthquake as the seismographs did not record anything. Some say it was a quarry blast, others a sonic boom caused by a passing supersonic flight.

A loud sound akin to a blast, which was heard in parts of the city on Thursday, left the public perplexed over its source and cause.

It was reported between 12.30 p.m. and 1 p.m.. and people in parts of Kuvempunagar, Saraswathipuram, Ramakrishna Nagar, V.V. Puram and Yadavgiri rushed out of their dwellings out of curiosity and panic.

‘Not earthquake’

While there were speculations of a minor tremor, H.T. Basavarajappa of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Mysore, ruled out any tremor and said earthquakes do not create a booming sound and attributed it to a quarry blast. “Students and staff at Manasagangotri too heard it but ignored it as an explosive that may have been triggered in the vicinity,” said Prakash Narasimhan of the same department.

Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep said it was not an earthquake as the seismographs did not record anything. The Department of Mines and Geology in Mysuru too did not receive any information of seismic activity.

A few others speculated that the sound may have been a sonic boom caused by a passing supersonic flight.
