The wrist-mounted device could further blur the line between the real world and the virtual world.

If there’s one thing you probably don’t want to experience with a greater level of realism while playing a virtual reality game it’s pain – especially if the game involves being hit or shot by enemies.

Nonetheless, Japanese startup H2L Technologies has recently unveiled a new wristband that delivers electric shocks to the wearer to simulate pain during virtual reality experiences.

It is also capable of simulating other sensations too, such as touch, weight and resistance.

“Feeling pain enables us to turn the metaverse world into a real [world], with increased feelings of presence and immersion,” said CEO Emi Tamaki who is thought to have come up with the idea after having a near-death experience.

“I realized life was precious so I decided to work on a new field that I really wanted to dig into, as there was no one doing research at the time.”

Whether the prospect of feeling pain in VR will prove popular with consumers, however, remains to be seen.
