Two More Volcanoes Erupt Overnight: White Island in New Zealand and Shiveluch in Russia

The volcanic unrest keeps on going around the world.

Two new volcanoes have erupted overnight on April 28, 2016: White Island in New Zealand and Shiveluch in Russia.

We are currently entering a phase of increased volcanic activity around the world. Almost every day, some new eruptions are reported, sometimes with more than 5 new volcanoes in a day.

After the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano on April 26, 2016, now it’s the Shiveluch volcano that exploded on April 28, 2016 in Kamchatka, Russia. According to Russian News networks, the eruption threw a column of ash to a height of 5.5 km above the crater and ash falls were registered in settlements around the volcanic peak.

This may have looked similar to this eruption in 2013:

Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, namely in New Zealand, White Island erupted overnight on April 28, 2016. No further eruptive activity has been observed since that time.

Therefore, the Volcanic Alert Level has been lowered to 2 from 3. This indicates that the volcano is not erupting anymore but remains in a state of moderate to heightened unrest. Seismic activity remains low and gas emission data shows similar levels to that prior to the eruption.

Here again a video from 2013:

Were is it going to hit next? Hopefully not Yellowstone!
