Wonders Abound in the World’s Deepest Abyss
The ocean holds countless undiscovered species.
The Okeanos Explorer vessel has revealed an undersea realm filled with weird and wonderful life forms.
Since April, the ship has been using sonar and remote-operated vehicles to explore the depths of the Mariana trench – a region of the Pacific which plunges down over 11km.
The mysterious creatures it has uncovered during its mission are nothing short of incredible.
“Every time we make a dive, we see something new,” said marine geologist Patricia Fryer. “They’re seeing fish which seem to be a cross-between an eel and a lizard fish. It’s mind-boggling.”
“When they zoom in to look more closely they’re like ‘nope, that’s not like any of the ones we know’.”
There is certainly plenty left to discover – especially given that more than 70% of our planet is covered by water and we know more about Mars than we do about the bottom of the sea.
Despite everything that has been found so far we have barely even begun to scratch the surface.
