Your Car Can Be Hacked Warns FBI

Can you car be hacked? The answer is Yes.

Government agencies have warned drivers regarding the dangers of car hacking. Car hacking has been happening a lot recently.

The FBI and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a public service announcement (PSA) Thursday warning drivers about what can take place if their vehicles’ infotainment systems get hacked and taken over remotely.

“Although vulnerabilities may not always result in an attacker being able to access all parts of the system, the safety risk to consumers could increase significantly if the access involves the ability to manipulate critical vehicle control systems,” reads the PSA in brief.

The statement adds: “Vulnerabilities may exist within a vehicle’s wireless communication functions, within a mobile device – such as a cellular phone or tablet connected to the vehicle via USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi – or within a third-party device connected through a vehicle diagnostic port. In these cases, it may be possible for an attacker to remotely exploit these vulnerabilities and gain access to the vehicle’s controller network or to data stored on the vehicle. Although vulnerabilities may not always result in an attacker being able to access all parts of the system, the safety risk to consumers could increase significantly if the access involves the ability to manipulate critical vehicle control system.”

Car owners are told to make certain there car’s operating system is up to date, drivers should be extra cautious when installing third-party devices to a vehicle as they can open up new vunerabilities. The agencies also advised that drivers be cautious when they modify this software. Drivers should always follow the latest cybersecurity-related recall announcements from automakers.

Fiat Chrysler had to make a recall that included 1.4 million cars. The recall came from the hacking of a Jeep Cherokee and its UConnect system, which led to a whole mess of drama and fines. Car owwners were being sent a thumb drive with a software patch to remedy the problem.
