Facebook Working on Technology that Would Allow You to TYPE with Your BRAIN
In its latest ambitious project, the social media giant says that it wants to build a “brain-computer speech-to-text interface” which can essentially type the words you think.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the new project “one day will let you communicate using only your mind” and is being developed by Building 8 – Facebook’s consumer hardware lab.
Mr Zuckerberg, who has a net worth of £46.5 billion, said in a post on Facebook: “Our brains produce enough data to stream 4 HD movies every second.
“The problem is that the best way we have to get information out into the world — speech — can only transmit about the same amount of data as a 1980s modem.
“We’re working on a system that will let you type straight from your brain about 5x faster than you can type on your phone today.
“Eventually, we want to turn it into a wearable technology that can be manufactured at scale.”
Facebook announced: “This is about decoding the words you’ve already decided to share by sending them to the speech centre of your brain.
“Think of it like this: You take many photos and choose to share only some of them. Similarly, you have many thoughts and choose to share only some of them.
“We will do this via non-invasive sensors that can be shipped at scale.”
In a separate project, the social media gargantuan said that it is designing devices that will allow people to “hear with your skin”.
The project will benefit deaf people, and says that it is possible as people can learn to hear through their skin “through slight pressure changes created by puffs of air and vibrations felt by their hands placed over a person’s throat and jaw.”
It continued: “With this technology, the ability to learn language and vocabulary are just the beginning of that we can ‘hear’ with our skin.”
