Peru Rocked by DAILY Quakes, Ongoing Earthquake SWARM Triggers Major Concern

PERU has been hit by almost one earthquake a day in 2017, leading to fears a devastating tremor is on its way.

New research has found that the South American country has been plagued by earthquakes in 2017, leaving many feeling unsettled.

The Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) has revealed that up until May 16, there had been a total of 132 earthquakes in 134 days.

The earthquakes ranged in strength from 3.2 on the Richter scale to 6.1, with he latter occurring in the district of Andoas, in Loreto, on April 18.

Just this week, the nation’s Civil Defence reported that there was material damages in the region of Ayacucho after a tremor measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck.

Peru is something of an earthquake hot spot as it straddles the so called ‘Ring of Fire’ – a series of fragile fault lines that stretches from New Zealand, all around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada and the USA, then all the way down to the southern tip of South America.

It is believed that 85 per cent of earthquakes occur on the Ring of Fire.

Now, it seems that tension is building on the Ring of Fire, and with a steady spate of quakes in Peru, experts worry that an enormous tremor could strike Peru.

While experts cannot predict where the next massive earthquake will strike, a study by researchers from the University of Oregon and France’s Géoazur laboratory last year stated a string of central and South American countries could be next.

A press release regarding the study which was published in the journal Science, read: “Peru [just north of Chile], Java or Mexico, which have not seen very large earthquakes over the last 200-300 years, appear to have all the necessary characteristics for a mega-earthquake in the future.”
