Possible Breakthrough in Hunt for Answers to Amelia Earhart Mystery

Researchers have found what could be evidence of Earhart’s plane under the sea near Nikumaroro.
More than 82 years after Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in her Lockheed Model 10 Electra, the question of what happened to her continues to remain one of the biggest unanswered mysteries of the modern age.
In recent years, however, clues have been found suggesting that Earhart’s plane may have gone down somewhere in the remote Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro and that the aviator and her navigator Fred Noonan may have even survived for several days on a small island while awaiting rescue.
Now possible new evidence in support of this theory has been unearthed in the form of an underwater photograph taken during an expedition to Nikumaroro back in 2009.
According to Ric Gillespie – executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) – a forensic expert is currently analyzing the image to see if it contains a piece of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra.
If this turns out to be the case, it would prove that she did crash in the vicinity of the atoll.
“There is an object in the photo that appears to be a Lockheed Electra engine cowling,” Gillespie told Mail Online.
“The similarity to an engine cowling and prop shaft was not noticed until years later and the exact location was not noted at the time, which meant attempts to re-locate the object were unsuccessful.”
